Throughout, I found Sternberg's basic thesis--that you have to take personal responsibility for every stage of the process--to be useful advice, and I think that following it sped my progress considerably. Some parts of the book are charmingly dated, such as Sternberg's earnest urging that you hire a good typist and his questioning of whether or complete dissertation doctoral survive to use computers to do your statistics.
